In 2018, my Millennial team lead dismissed me as a “Marathoner among Sprinters” and fired me for not being a “good culture fit” (read: too old). Little did he know, his age-biased shade would become my fuel—and that my daughter, Jaiya, would go on to become an Elite Track and Field Sprinter and Jumper, now training for the LA28 Olympics. The irony is almost poetic. No worries, though. I’ll be sure to thank him—and others—in my upcoming memoir: Marathoner Among Sprinters: A Black Mother’s Fight for Equity. Stay tuned.
